YAZMIN LACEY NOT TODAY MATE

Yazmin Lacey was born to a musical family in East London where her strong singing voice was nurtured. However, it wasn't until she moved to Nottingham that she began letting her guard down and performing. By day she would work for a children's charity and by night she built up a repertoire - first by performing at open mics, and then at a night organised by Giles Peterson's indie label Brownswood Recordings. The label's talent discovery programme Bubblers propelled Yazmin in her musical endeavours and allowed her to record her stunning debut EP Black Moon in 2017. Yazmin has just dropped a new single 'Not Today Mate'. To open the song, creamy keyboards lie under a skippy beat. Yazmin's vocals are rich, full with a soulful melisma. Her voice is reminiscent of Erykah Badu, which is definitely no bad thing. A lush musical landscape is built up, with uplifting synth pads, some assured wah guitar, and jazzy keyboard runs. The chorus is catchy and will probably play out in your head throughout the day. Yazmin is off to a good start this year with 4 UK shows in February (the London gig is already sold out): Brighton on 5th, London 6th, Manchester 7th, Nottingham 8th. Check out the new single and head down to one of the shows! -Ellie Rose-Davies
